I’m pretty sure almost any mom would love her own magic wand to wave and *poof*…her morning would perfectly fall into place. She would feel energetic & alert, her children would wake up cheerful and everyone would be ahead of schedule! It’s the morning we all dream of. We can go to bed with the best of intentions yet somehow the morning still greets us with pure chaos. But what if you had that Magic Wand to make over your mornings?
The first wave of the wand is the most important and as with any other area of life the first step is usually the hardest. Waking up before the kids! It is so tempting to just lay there but I do not know a single mother who doesn’t say she feels better if she can start her day with a little bit of time to herself. This is truly a choice we make to just suck it up & do it. And you know what? Once you throw off the covers and stand up it already feels worth it. You are on your way to your Magical Morning.
The next step may be different for everyone. What do you actually do with that precious chunk of early morning peace & quiet? You can sit with your coffee and stare at your phone or you can maximize that time to help you live your best life and to begin each day with gratitude, joy and vitality.
My own morning was transformed when I read the book The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod and then The Miracle Morning for Parents by Hal Elrod and Mike & Lindsay McCarthy. These books gave me so much insight into how I could make over my mornings and start each day the way I wanted to even though I wasn’t exactly sure where to begin. The teach the SAVERS plan to start your day (Silence, Affirmation, Visualization, Exercise, Reading, Scribe Writing) and I could see where each of these activities could add value. I wholeheartedly recommend checking out these books to learn more!
As with any plan you find on line the crucial thing to remember is that its ok to take what you can use and leave the rest. Our lives are not cookie cutter and we should always feel comfortable finding a way to apply an idea to our own life. If every part of the SAVERS plan just doesn’t feel good for you, or maybe just doesn’t fit into your morning, that’s ok! You can leave it out or you can apply it to a different part of your day. Here is what I find to be the perfect blend for truly Magical Morning for any mom.
Step one- Silence. Don’t pick your phone up right away. Be still and silent and fill your mind with gratitude for your life and what you will encounter in the day ahead. This can be great for those of us who like to lay in bed for a few minutes after opening our eyes.
Step two- Get Out of Bed! The hard one! Reward yourself with a hot cup of coffee or tea. Drink a big glass of water as it brews.
Step 3- Affirmations. Sit down and tell yourself what you need to hear! I open my planner to my list and read to myself several times. I have affirmations for the kind of day I want to have, affirmations for my marriage, my children and my home, and affirmations for my long term goals.
Step 4- Visualization. Sip your coffee and visualize yourself living the day you have just affirmed. See yourself interacting positively with your children. Feel that embrace you will share with your husband when he returns home. See yourself achieving your to do list for the day- and achieving it with intention, joy and energy
Step 5- Write it out. Open your planner, binder, notepad or whatever works for you and write down your goals for the day- include your to do list for your home, your family and yourself. Be sure to include both tasks you need to complete and things you want to do for you. Write down your meals, even if you already have a meal plan. Last but not least- write down three things you are grateful for.
Acknowledging gratitude before you encounter your kids, your spouse, your chores or any other obstacle you may face can truly change how you respond. This trick is without a doubt truly magical.
By now your coffee cup may be empty and a little person with bed head may have joined you. Its time to get up and live the day you affirmed, the day you visualized and most importantly- the day you are GRATEFUL for. May it be truly magical!
